Maometto e Muezza

Si dice che Maometto amasse molto gli animali e i mici in particolare. Una leggenda narra che egli avesse un gatto, Muezza. Un giorno questo micio stava dormendo placidamente accoccolato su una falda del mantello preferito del suo padrone quando la campana suonò l’ora della preghiera. Maometto rimase per un po’ indeciso sul da farsi, in quanto non voleva svegliare Muezza, poi prese un coltello e taglio l’angolo del mantello dove il gatto dormiva. Quindi Maometto in silenzio si recò a pregare. Quando fece ritorno Muezza era sveglio e gli andò in contro sommergendolo di fusa e miagolii di ringraziamento e il Profeta fu talmente lieto di questa accoglienza che garantì al gatto un posto in paradiso.

Il gatto dei desideri

In Turchia si ritiene che il gatto dei desideri, quello cioè capace di realizzare i desideri che gli vengono espressi esista. La leggenda dice che per aver esaudito un proprio desiderio si debba trovare un tale gatto e convincerlo ad accoccolarcisi in grembo. Quindi bisognerebbe sussurrargli all’orecchio il desiderio e poi offrirgli molte leccornie e coccole. A questo punto, se il gatto avra’ dimostrato di gradire le nostre offerte il desiderio si realizzera’. Questo può succedere ovviamente solo se il gatto è davvero un gatto dei desideri. Purtroppo è impossibile sapere se un gatto abbia davvero questi poteri poichè è ritenuto un atto foriero di cattiva sorte rivelare che un micio abbia realizzato un desiderio.

La reincarnazione di Ataturk

Una superstizione Turca ritiene che il grande Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, il fondatore della repubblica turca, si debba reincarnare un giorno nel corpo di un gattone Angora Turco di colore bianco ad occhi impari (un blu e uno ambra per la precisione) sordo. Questo è probabilmente il motivo per cui questa varieta’ di colore dell’Angora Turco è tenuta in così alta considerazione in Turchia.

Il dono di Allah

Molte persone in Turchia credono che gli Angora bianchi siano un dono di Allah. Questa superstizione probabilmente deriva in parte dalle leggende precedenti e in parte dalle buffe macchioline colorate, in Turchia note come impronte di Allah, che spesso i cuccioli bianchi hanno e che poi svaniscono entro il primo anno di vita. Queste macchiette (kittens caps), non sono altro che la testimonianza del colore ‘nascosto’ dalla candida pelliccia.

L’origine del Maine Coon

Una leggenda narra che la regina Maria Antonietta possedesse dei bellissimi esemplari di Angora Turco. La regina era molto affezionata ai suoi gatti, e quando vide la criticità della sua posizione all’inizio della rivoluzione francese cercò un modo per proteggerli da una sicura pessima sorte. Li affidò alle cure del Generale La Fayette, che si stava imbarcando per l’America, contando di raggiungere al più presto i suoi beniamini nel nuovo mondo. La storia ci dice che mai Maria Antonietta lasciò la Francia, e i suoi gatti si inselvatichirino in America ibridandosi con i locali gatti selvatici. L’ibrido così creato sarebbe poi diventato un bellissimo e massiccio micione, a noi noto ora come Maine Coon.

Maometto & Muezza

It is told that Maometto loved animals very much, expecially cats. A legend says that he had a cat, colled Muezza. One day Muezza was sleeping on Maometto’s favourite mantle and the bell rung the prayers hour. Maometto thought the situation over for a while and, not willing to wake up the cat, cut his mantle with a knife. Than he left to the temple. When he came back Muezza was awaken and run to him purring loudly a meowing his thanks. The Profet was so happy for this behaviour that gran the cat a place in Heaven

The wishing cat

In Turkey people believe that the wishing cat, the cat that makes your wishes come true, exists. The legend tells that in order to convince the wishing cat to realise your dreams you have to make him sit on your legs, than you wisper your wishes to his ears and offer him treats. If the cat liked your offers your dreams will became true. But this happens only if the cat is a real *wishing cat*. Unfortunately it is impossible to know if a cat has this gift as it is considered unlucky to reveal such a secret..

Ataturk reincarnation

 A turkish superstition tells that Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the great foundere of turkish republic, will onw day come back on earth as a white, odd eyed (a blue eye and an amber one), deaf Turkish Angora cat. This is probably why in Turkey this variety of cats is so dear to people.. 

Allah’s gift

Many people in Turkey believe that white Angoras are a gift from Allah. This superstition probably derives from legends above and from the fact that white kittens are born with small colored patche on their head (kitten caps) that disappear within the first year of age. This patches are known in Turkey as Allah’s prints.

Origin of Maine Coon breed

A leggend tells that queen Marie Antoinette owned some very beautiful Turkish Angora cats. The queen was very fond of her cats, so when she saw that things were not going very well for the monarchy, tried to find a way to save them from a sure death. She gave them to her loyal general La Fayette, who was sailing to America. She was thinking to join them in America as soon as possible. History now tells us that Marie Antoniette never went to Amrica, and her cats went to live in the wild. They generate an special kind of Hybrid, mating with local wild cats. This strong cat is nowadays known as Maine Coon.
